The TravelDiari Points Valuation Index

Updated

By Ajay Singh, Co-Founder, TravelDiari·15 programs tracked·Live AwardWallet data

Headline finding (Q2 2026)

World of Hyatt remains the most valuable hotel points currency at 2.19¢/point. That is roughly 1.7× the value of Wyndham Rewards (1.29¢/pt). Among bank-flexible currencies, Chase Ultimate Rewards and Amex Membership Rewards lead at about 1.9¢/point each, with Bilt Points close behind. The reason: all three transfer 1:1 to World of Hyatt, where the highest sustained per-point value lives.

How we value points

We publish the conservative end of the per-point value range. The numbers below are averages across real bookings, not the peak values you would get from a flukish redemption. That makes them lower than most points blogs report and more honest. You can plan a real trip against these numbers and the math will hold up.

check_circleWhat we include

  • Typical traveler redemption patterns, not edge cases.
  • Real seat and room availability, not theoretical award charts.
  • Fuel surcharges and taxes deducted from the headline value.
  • Brand-level overrides where the data is reliable.

blockWhat we exclude

  • One-off peak redemptions that rarely repeat.
  • Hard-to-find First Class seats most users will not book.
  • Aspirational redemptions that require months of planning.
  • The overhead of carrying a large unspent points balance.

event_repeatHow often we update

The underlying data refreshes every six hours from AwardWallet's feed. We re-publish the editorial copy and rankings on the 15th of every month. Methodology is held constant so values are comparable month over month. When a program changes its award chart (Marriott peak pricing, Hilton free-night tweaks), the impact shows up in the next refresh.

How our valuations compare to other sources

The Points Guy, NerdWallet, and Frequent Miler all publish their own per-point valuations. They are generally higher than ours, because they include peak redemptions and aspirational uses (Lufthansa First Class, Park Hyatt Maldives suites) that the typical traveler will never book. Our numbers sit at the conservative end of the range.

Why that matters for a real booking decision: if you use a 2.5¢ valuation in your head, almost every redemption looks like a win. If you use our 1.9¢ valuation, you start saying no to weak transfers and saving points for the stays that actually deliver. Every booking widget on TravelDiari uses these same numbers, so the dollar-equivalent value you see in a search result matches the value you see on this page.

Frequently asked questions

What are airline miles and hotel points actually worth?

Airline miles range from 1.2 to 2.0 cents per mile for most travelers. Premium-cabin redemptions can push 5 to 8 cents but require flexibility. Hotel points range from 0.4 to 0.8 cents per point at most chains, with Hyatt the standout at 1.5 to 2.0 cents because of its generous award chart.

What is 1 Amex Membership Rewards point worth?

About 1.85 cents in average value, based on real redemption data. The highest value comes from transferring to a partner airline (Air Canada Aeroplan, Air France Flying Blue, Virgin Atlantic) for long-haul business class.

What is the value of a Hyatt point?

Around 2.0 cents per point, the most valuable hotel currency in the market. The best results come from free nights at Category 4 to 6 properties where the cash rate is over $400, especially Park Hyatt and Andaz hotels.

Are Hilton points worth less than Marriott points?

Yes. Hilton Honors averages about 0.45 cents per point, while Marriott Bonvoy averages around 0.75 cents. Hilton makes up for the lower per-point value by handing out points at much higher rates (Diamond elites earn up to 40 points per dollar at Hilton properties).

Why are Hilton Honors points worth so little?

Hilton runs a high-issuance, low-value model. Diamond elites earn up to 40 points per dollar spent at Hilton properties, but each point is worth only about 0.45 cents. The math still works to roughly 18 percent return per dollar, but high-end properties (Conrad Maldives, Waldorf Astoria) can charge 95,000 to 150,000 points per night.

How does TravelDiari calculate cents per point?

We use AwardWallet's live valuation feed as the primary source. AwardWallet aggregates real redemption data from millions of users to produce statistically rigorous per-point values, refreshed every six hours. We supplement with our own analysis of brand-level redemption patterns (Park Hyatt vs Hyatt Place vs Andaz) and surface those overrides when the data quality threshold is met (10 or more sample bookings per brand).

Why do brand-level values differ from headline program values?

A single hotel chain's loyalty currency can deliver very different value depending on which brand you redeem at. For example, Marriott Bonvoy points are worth around 0.75 cents on average, but Ritz-Carlton redemptions come in closer to 1.0 to 1.2 cents while Courtyard redemptions fall to 0.5 cents. The Index surfaces these brand-level overrides so travelers can target the highest-value redemption properties.

How often is this Index updated?

The underlying data refreshes every six hours from AwardWallet's feed. We re-publish the editorial copy and rankings every month, with methodology held constant so values are comparable month over month.
